Profile

I am a researcher at the ERI, specialising in carbon cycling in aquatic systems and peatlands. Throughout my time at the ERI I have been involved in a wide range of projects under the theme of ‘Carbon, Water and Climate’ including:

– RESAS  – A project focusing on four eddy covariance flux towers that are recording data on changes in carbon and water balances among forest-to-bog restoration sites in North Scotland. The project is run in conjunction between the Environmental Research Institute, University of Highlands and Islands, James Hutton Institute, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, University of Exeter, and the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology – Edinburgh.

– InSAR as a tool to evaluate peatland sensitivity to global change (2017-2020) NERC Soil Security Programme. (www.soilsecurity.org/insar-as-a-tool/)

– EuroRun – a European wide survey of gas fluxes from running waters. (https://freshproject-eurorun.jimdo.com/)

– LOCATE (Land Ocean Carbon Transfer) programme – a Great Britain wide study on how much carbon from soils is getting into our rivers and estuaries, determining what happens to it, and answering questions about the long-term fate of the organic carbon held in the soil over the next 50 to 100 years. This NERC funded project is led by National Oceanography Center (NOC), in partnership with Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH), the Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), British Geological Survey (BGS), and the University of Highlands & Islands (UHI)

– Quantifying carbon accumulation and loss in afforested peatlands (2016-2020). Leverhulme Large Grant. (https://www.york.ac.uk/environment/carbon-accumulation-loss/#tab-1)
