Dounreay: ‘Nuclear fission and social fusion’ in Scotland’s atom town, 1954 – 1966

Thursday 4th October, 17.15

ERI Castle Street Seminar Room, Thurso

Linda Ross, UHI Centre for History

Linda is undertaking an Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) funded collaborative doctorate with the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) and Historic Environment Scotland (HES). In North Sutherland, Caithness, and in particular Thurso, Dounreay has played an enormous part in shaping our heritage, and Linda’s work aims to capture that.

This is being done in a variety of ways, including the obligatory trawling through thousands of documents relating to both Dounreay’s and the local area’s history. Much of this is now conveniently stored at Nucleus: the Nuclear and Caithness Archives, in Wick – and worth a visit in its own right. Another side to the research has been getting out into the local towns and villages to speak to those who worked there and to gather together experiences that would otherwise likely be lost.

As Dounreay’s Heritage Officer James Gunn has said “This is a unique opportunity to capture our industrial heritage in such a way as we preserve the story for years to come, add value to the site’s heritage strategy, and link back into the Dounreay story already housed in Caithness Horizons and the NDA Nuclear Archives.
