Qualifications

I have a Joint Honours BSc. in Marine Biology and Ecology, St Andrews University (1984) and a Diploma in Management, Institute of Leadership and Management (2005).

Profile

I am the Outreach Co-ordinator for the ERI, responsible for delivery of our Outreach Strategy as well as providing contribution to knowledge exchange, research and commercial activity. I am responsible for promoting scientific research through educational and outreach activity as well as co-ordinating the ERI’s student placement programme and international internships. This work ensures that our research is made accessible to a wide range of audiences and that we actively engage with schools (STEM) to encourage pupils in the north to consider careers in environmental science.

Previous experience includes monitoring benthic habitats, assessing community response to marine park designation and working for Scottish Natural Heritage (and NNC) as a conservation advisor, initially on marine topics and latterly on land use and agriculture. Over the years I have contributed to the development of environmental policy and legislation; worked with government and NGO’s on European funding programmes; co-ordinated the National Goose Management Review Group and provided practical advice on environmental management.

I am interested in renewable energy and the marine environment; peatland ecology and the relationship between land use and wildlife/ plant communities in Scotland as well as developing innovative and exciting outreach activity.
