Environmental Effects of Tidal Energy – a seminar by Benjamin Williamson from the University of the Highlands and Islands’ Environmental Research Institute.
Benjamin Williamson presents his research into environmental monitoring of tidal stream energy sites, including MeyGen in the Inner Sound of the Pentland Firth.
Marine mammals and seabirds target tidal sites for foraging, but interactions with tidal turbines are still unknown. The research uses a combination of seabed instruments, boat surveys and drones to survey these challenging environments to understand the interactions between tidal turbines and animals. He will present the techniques and insights into animal behaviour at these sites.
