Located in Thurso, the ERI benefits from unrivalled access to the “Flow Country” peatlands of Caithness and Sutherland: covering 4000 km2, they represent largest expanse of blanket bog in Europe and a site of global significance, candidate for UNESCO World Heritage Site status.
The Flow Country is also a landscape of changes, where centuries of human use have left their imprint on the peatlands, and where large-scale restoration and infrastructure development are currently rolled out at pace. It is also a landscape where events like wildfires and droughts have become more likely, because of the changing climate.
The ERI’s ‘Peatlands” theme aims to study peatland resilience across scales and discipline boundaries, including through the Leverhulme-funded programme of research “Developing a new understanding of blanket bogs from molecules to landscapes”. We now seek a Palaeo-Climate Modeller (Research Fellow) who will join our team and use a combination of palaeo-ecological techniques and climate modelling approach(es) to help understand how blanket bog processes and distribution may respond to the combined pressures of land-use and climate change.
As well as local knowledge and field-based facilities within world-class peatlands, the researcher will benefit from access to existing datasets, office space and laboratories facilities within UHI North Highlands’ Thurso sites, Castle St. and the Centre for Energy and the Environment (CfEE).
